Pet fur or ashes jewellery: which should you choose?
Choose pet fur jewellery if you want to keep a little of their coat in a piece you can wear, whether your pet is beside you or you are remembering them. Choose ashes jewellery if you have cremation ashes and would like a small amount set into your keepsake. If you have both, the decision comes down to what you want to preserve, the appearance you prefer and the designs suited to those materials.
Here are the practical differences to consider before choosing your piece.
| Your priority | Fur | Ashes |
|---|---|---|
| What you preserve | A little of their coat | A small amount of cremation ashes |
| Visible detail | Strands, sometimes subtle | Particles with varied texture |
| Living pet keepsake | Yes, in suitable designs | Requires cremation ashes |
Start with what you have and what you want to keep
You do not need ashes to commission a keepsake. Fur collected during your pet's lifetime can be used in suitable jewellery, and a saved clipping can also become a memorial after a loss. If you have ashes but no fur, an ashes design gives you another way to carry a small part of them with you.
If both are available, think about the connection you want the piece to hold. A little of their coat might bring to mind brushing them or a familiar patch of colour. You might prefer to use a small amount of ashes while keeping the fur separately. There is no need to use everything you have, or to decide on every future keepsake at once.
Have very little material? Ask us about the quantity and suitability for your chosen design before ordering or posting it. A photograph and a description can help us understand your question, although a photograph alone cannot guarantee the finished result.
How fur and ashes look in a ring
Fur: strands, colour and natural variation
In our pet hair rings, fur is held within the resin channel around the band. The effect depends on the fur you send. Darker strands generally give stronger contrast, while pale, fine fur or undercoat can become more translucent in resin.
That matters if you are picturing a very clear outline of each hair. We work carefully with the material, but cannot promise that every strand will remain fully visible. Look at more than one example, and ask about your pet's particular fur if visibility is central to your choice.

Ashes: particles and texture
Ashes create a different pattern within the resin. Their natural colour and particle sizes vary, so one finished ring is not an exact template for another. In our workshop, we select a suitable mixture of coarse and fine particles before gradually setting a small amount into the ring.
Our silver ashes ring can focus on the ashes themselves or include optional crushed opals. Check the available options when comparing photographs: an opal example also shows the colour of the added material.

Choose a design made for your inclusion
A similar outline does not mean two products accept the same material. Our silver pet hair ring and silver ashes ring have separate listings so you can choose the appropriate piece and its available options.
If you want fur and ashes in one item, our Double Heart ring has two separate settings and can hold fur in one heart and ashes in the other. This is different from mixing both in a single channel. Contact us to discuss the arrangement before ordering, and keep your materials separately labelled.
For other styles, browse the pet hair jewellery and ashes jewellery collections. Check the individual listing rather than assuming every ring or pendant can be made with either inclusion.
Consider what you are comfortable sending
Both options use only a small amount. Follow the instructions for the actual piece you order, and retain some at home where possible. If your saved fur is your only clipping, or you are unsure about separating a little of the ashes, speak to us before taking that step.
When ashes reach our workshop, we immediately record them in our intake log, which sends you an update email. They are then checked and placed in our workshop safe. During setting, we collect any loose grains and add them back to the remaining ashes.
We always return all unused inclusions with your finished jewellery. You do not need to request this. Our guide to sending fur, hair or ashes explains the next steps after ordering.
Think about wearing the finished piece
Choosing ashes instead of fur does not make a resin-set ring suitable for every activity. Consider the setting, the fit and the care it needs alongside the inclusion itself. Remove your jewellery before bathing, swimming, cleaning or using harsh chemicals, and follow our care instructions.
Before ordering, ask yourself: do I have suitable material, am I comfortable sending a small amount, and does the design suit how I want to wear it? If any answer is uncertain, tell us what you have and which piece you are considering. You can make the decision one step at a time.
