Pet fur jewellery: Christmas gifts for dog and cat lovers
A piece of jewellery made with their own dog's or cat's fur can make a personal Christmas gift. It can celebrate the pet beside them now, with a little of that familiar coat set into a ring, pendant or pair of cufflinks.
Choosing it takes a little more planning than buying something ready-made. You will need suitable fur, the right size or chain, and time for the piece to be made. Here is how to put those decisions together.
Choose something they would enjoy wearing
Look at the jewellery they already reach for. Do they favour silver or gold? Wear a necklace most days? Keep rings for evenings out? Their usual choices are a useful starting point.
A pet hair ring
Our sterling silver pet hair ring holds fur in a resin channel around the band. It comes in 4mm, 6mm and 8mm widths. There is also a 9ct gold pet hair ring for someone who prefers gold.
For a ring, confirm the size of the finger they intend to wear it on. Band width affects how a ring feels, so try a similar width when checking the fit. If you do not know their size, involve them before ordering. Our ring-choice guide explains the options.
A heart pendant
A sterling silver pet hair heart necklace is an option for someone who prefers necklaces. You can choose the pendant alone or add an 18-inch Belcher or snake chain. Check the chain length against one they like wearing.
Pet hair cufflinks
For someone who regularly wears cufflinks, our sterling silver pet hair cufflinks offer another way to use their pet's fur. Think about when they would wear them, whether for work or an occasion they are looking forward to.
Compare the current prices and options on each product page. Choose something that suits their routine too: our care guide explains when to remove the jewellery and how to look after it.
How much can you keep a surprise?
You can keep the finished piece a surprise while asking about size, metal or style. If those details are uncertain, choosing the design together may be part of the gift.
Always have permission to use and send the pet's fur, especially if it is a saved clipping. For a living pet, fur from normal grooming may be suitable. Follow the instructions for the chosen piece and ask us first if you have only a few strands or are unsure about the sample. Our collecting and storing fur guide covers preparation.
Look at photographs with the recipient if the appearance matters to them. Pale or fine fur can become more translucent in resin, and a finished piece will not necessarily look like the example in the product gallery. We return all unused fur with the jewellery.
Would they like an engraving?
A pet's name, nickname or adoption date can make a ring more personal. Optional inside engraving on the silver pet hair ring costs £20, with up to 25 characters including spaces and punctuation. Letters are uppercase and slightly italicised. Check the engraving options on the ring you choose; necklaces and pendants are not engraved.
Our ring engraving ideas can help with a short message. Check spellings and dates carefully before ordering.
Planning around Christmas
Allow 7 to 10 days for silver jewellery and four weeks for gold, counted from when we receive the fur. Delivery time is additional.
Allow time to confirm the size, prepare the fur and post it to us as well. Place the order before sending anything, then follow the instructions supplied. The sending guide explains that part of the process.
If you need the gift for Christmas Day, or for an earlier family gathering, contact us with the date and piece you have in mind before ordering. We can check what is possible against the workshop schedule.
If there is not enough time, you can give a card offering to have a piece made and choose it together afterwards.
If the gift remembers a pet who has died
Ask whether they would like memorial jewellery before arranging it. Christmas may be a welcome time to remember their pet, or they may prefer to leave the decision until later. Our guide to choosing a pet memorial gift has advice for that conversation.
