Pet hair rings: choosing the perfect memorial ring for your beloved companion
A pet hair ring is a personal choice, but choosing one also involves practical questions: which metal do you enjoy wearing, what band width feels comfortable, and how will you confirm your size? Start with those decisions. The right ring should suit your hand and your routine, as well as hold meaning for you.
This guide compares the choices available for Fur & Forever’s silver and gold pet hair rings. If you are still deciding between a ring and another piece, browse the pet hair and fur jewellery collection first.
Silver or 9ct solid gold?
Choosing sterling silver
The sterling silver Pet Hair Ring is a useful starting point if you usually wear silver jewellery or prefer a lower budget than solid gold. Compare it with the rings you already reach for: do you like a simple band, a more noticeable width, or jewellery that feels light on your hand?
Silver is not a less meaningful choice. Set a budget that feels comfortable, then choose the size and width that work for you. The product page shows the current price for your selected options.
Choosing 9ct solid gold
The 9ct Solid Gold Pet Hair Ring may suit you if gold is already part of your jewellery collection. It costs more than the silver version, and the selected width and finger size affect the price. Compare the exact configuration you would order rather than the starting prices alone.
Both choices need appropriate care. Choosing gold does not remove the need to protect the fur setting, so include aftercare in your decision rather than choosing a metal on the assumption that it will need no attention.
Choosing a 4mm, 6mm or 8mm band
Both rings are offered in 4mm, 6mm and 8mm widths. Width describes how much of your finger the band covers; ring size describes its fit around your finger. They are separate decisions.
- 4mm: the narrowest option, worth trying if you prefer a more understated band.
- 6mm: a middle option if you would like something more substantial without choosing the widest band.
- 8mm: the widest option, for a more prominent look and greater coverage of the finger.
A photograph can help you judge the appearance, but it cannot tell you how a width will feel. If possible, try bands of comparable widths at a jeweller. Bend your fingers and notice whether the band feels comfortable beside neighbouring fingers. There is no rule that a particular hand shape must wear a particular width.
What will your pet’s fur look like in the ring?
Fur does not always look the same in a finished ring as it does before it is set. Pale, fine or soft undercoat fur can become more translucent in resin, creating a subtler effect. Darker fur usually gives stronger visible contrast. These are general expectations, rather than a promise of how an individual clipping will look.
Band width also affects how much space the inclusion occupies. Our 4mm, 6mm and 8mm pet hair rings have inclusion channels of approximately 2mm, 4mm and 6mm respectively. A wider channel gives the inclusion more room, but does not guarantee that every strand will be visible. Choose a width that feels comfortable as well as one whose appearance you like.
Look at the examples on the sterling silver pet hair ring and 9ct gold pet hair ring pages. Each shows an individual piece; another pet’s fur may give a different result. If your sample is very pale, fine or limited, contact us about your fur and chosen ring before ordering.
Confirm your size before production
These are made-to-size rings, not adjustable bands. The silver ring’s listed sizes run from H to Z; the gold ring’s from H to Z+4. Check the current product options before ordering, and contact the studio if your size is not listed.
Ask a jeweller to measure the finger you intend to wear the ring on, ideally using a band comparable to your chosen width. If a measurement seems uncertain, check it again rather than guessing. Do not automatically go half a size up: the appropriate fit depends on your finger and the band.
Resizing options are limited, so ask the studio about any uncertainty before your ring is made. The frequently asked questions explain the current sizing arrangements.
Decide whether to add engraving
A pet’s name, nickname or a short date can make an inside engraving personal. Ring engraving is limited to 25 characters and uses uppercase letters. Write your message exactly as you want it, including spaces and punctuation, and check the character count before submitting it. Our pet memorial ring engraving ideas include short messages and examples with character counts.
Budget an additional £20 for optional inside ring engraving, and check availability on your chosen ring. Leaving the inside plain is equally valid.
