Choosing a thoughtful pet memorial gift
A thoughtful pet memorial gift starts with the person receiving it. Jewellery may be welcome, but the design, timing and use of a pet’s fur or ashes are personal decisions. Asking first can be more considerate than planning a surprise.
This guide helps you offer a keepsake while leaving those choices with the recipient. It applies whether they are remembering a dog, a cat or another much-loved companion.
Ask whether they would like a keepsake
Begin with an offer that is easy to accept, postpone or decline. For example: “I’d like to give you something to remember them by. Would you like to choose a keepsake together, or would you prefer something different?”
That is suggested wording, not a script you need to follow. You can also offer a card or photograph without asking the person to make decisions about jewellery. If they are unsure, leave the choice open rather than setting a date by which they must decide.
Leave the inclusion decision with them
Do not take or send a pet’s fur or ashes without the owner’s permission. Having material available does not necessarily mean they want it made into jewellery or feel ready to part with any of it.
If they do want a piece, discuss which inclusion they would like to use and let them decide what they are comfortable supplying. Check the instructions for the chosen design before preparing anything. If the material is limited or its suitability is uncertain, ask the studio first.
Choose together, especially when fit matters
Ask about the jewellery they normally wear: their preferred metal, whether they enjoy rings or necklaces, and whether they want the keepsake to be noticeable or discreet. Our guide to types of pet memorial jewellery can help with that conversation.
For a ring, confirm the correct finger size rather than borrowing an approximate measurement or guessing. Resizing resin-set rings is limited. For another format, check its actual dimensions and available options rather than assuming it will suit everyone.
The hair and fur jewellery and ashes jewellery collections show current designs. Let the recipient choose any personalisation, then check the selected product’s current price and requirements before ordering.
Allow time for decisions, making and delivery
Fur & Forever’s production timeframe is 2–4 weeks from receipt of inclusions to dispatch; allow four weeks for gold jewellery. Delivery time is additional. That period starts after the inclusions arrive, not on the day you first suggest the gift.
Read the sending guide together. If an occasion matters, contact the studio before ordering to discuss the timing and any questions about the arrangements. Avoid promising the recipient a delivery date that has not been agreed.
You can give a card explaining your offer while leaving the design and order for later. There is no need to rush a personal choice to make it coincide with an anniversary or birthday.
Keep the message simple
You might write: “I’m thinking of you and remembering how much they were loved. I’d like to help you choose something when you feel ready.” If you have a real shared memory of their pet, a few words about it can make the message personal.
Our guide to what to say when someone’s pet dies offers more wording ideas. Whatever you give, leave room for the recipient to respond in their own way. A thoughtful offer does not require them to choose jewellery.
